Crustaceans: risks and product recalls in Ireland

Prawns, crab, lobster and other crustaceans are a declarable shellfish allergen and a common cause of severe, often adult-onset reactions.

Most at risk: People with crustacean (shellfish) allergy.

What it is

Crustaceans include prawns, shrimp, crab, lobster and langoustine. Crustacean (shellfish) allergy often begins in adulthood and is usually lifelong.

Health effects of a reaction

Reactions are frequently severe and can include anaphylaxis. Crustacean can be hidden in sauces, soups, stocks and some flavourings.

How it leads to a recall

Recalls occur when crustacean is present but not declared, through labelling errors, recipe changes or cross-contamination.

What to do

If you are allergic, do not eat the affected product — return it for a refund. Carry your adrenaline auto-injector and call 112/999 for a severe reaction.
