Eggs: risks and product recalls in Ireland

A common childhood allergen that must be declared on food; undeclared egg is a frequent cause of allergen recalls.

Most at risk: Young children with egg allergy.

What it is

Egg allergy is a reaction to proteins in egg white and yolk. It is one of the most common food allergies in young children, and is often outgrown, though it can persist into adulthood.

Health effects of a reaction

Reactions can include skin rashes and hives, stomach upset, and swelling, and in severe cases anaphylaxis. Egg can be present in many foods where it is not obvious, such as baked goods, pasta, sauces, mayonnaise and glazes.

How it leads to a recall

Recalls occur when egg is present but not declared — through a labelling or packaging error, a recipe change, or cross-contamination. The product is safe for most people but a hidden risk for those with an egg allergy.

What to do

If you are allergic to egg, do not eat the affected product — return it for a refund. Follow your allergy action plan if you react, and call 112/999 for signs of a severe reaction.
