Fish: risks and product recalls in Ireland

A declarable allergen that can cause severe reactions and is often hidden in sauces, stocks and seasonings.

Most at risk: People with fish allergy.

What it is

Fish allergy is a reaction to proteins in finned fish. It is usually lifelong and can be severe. Fish is hidden in products such as Worcestershire sauce, fish sauce, stocks and some pizzas and dressings.

Health effects of a reaction

Reactions can range from skin and stomach symptoms to anaphylaxis. Some people react to the vapours from cooking fish.

How it leads to a recall

Recalls occur when fish is present but not declared, through labelling errors, recipe changes or cross-contamination.

What to do

If you are allergic to fish, do not eat the affected product — return it for a refund. Carry your adrenaline auto-injector and call 112/999 for a severe reaction.
