Chemical hazards
Lead: risks and product recalls in Ireland
A toxic metal restricted in consumer products; items such as cheap jewellery and toys are recalled when lead content or migration exceeds limits.
What it is
Lead is a toxic heavy metal with no safe level of exposure, especially for children. Its use is tightly restricted in consumer products such as toys and jewellery.
Health effects
Lead is particularly harmful to children, where exposure can affect brain development, learning and behaviour. It accumulates in the body over time, and young children are at higher risk because they absorb it more readily and may mouth or swallow small items.
How it leads to a recall
Products — often low-cost metal jewellery, toys and imported goods — are recalled when testing finds lead content or migration above the permitted limit.
What to do
Stop using an affected product, keep it away from children, and return it for a refund.
