Milk: risks and product recalls in Ireland

One of the 14 allergens that must be declared on food. Undeclared milk is a common reason for allergen recalls and a real risk for people with a milk allergy.

Most at risk: People with a diagnosed cow's milk allergy, especially young children.

What it is

Milk from cows (and other animals) contains proteins — mainly casein and whey — that can trigger an allergic reaction. A milk allergy is different from lactose intolerance: the allergy is an immune reaction to the protein, while intolerance is difficulty digesting the sugar (lactose) and is not life-threatening.

Health effects of a reaction

Reactions range from hives, swelling, stomach upset and vomiting to, in severe cases, anaphylaxis — a rapid, life-threatening reaction affecting breathing and blood pressure. Even a small amount of milk protein can trigger a reaction in a sensitised person.

How it leads to a recall

Most milk recalls happen when milk is present but not declared on the label — because of a labelling error, a recipe change, the wrong packaging, or cross-contamination on a line that also handles dairy. The food is safe for most people; the risk is specifically to those with a milk allergy.

What to do

If you are allergic to milk, do not eat the affected product — return it for a refund. If you have eaten it and have symptoms, follow your allergy action plan; use your adrenaline auto-injector and call 112/999 if you have signs of a severe reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat, faintness).
