Molluscs: risks and product recalls in Ireland

Mussels, oysters, squid and other molluscs are a declarable shellfish allergen that can cause severe reactions.

Most at risk: People with mollusc (shellfish) allergy.

What it is

Molluscs include mussels, oysters, clams, scallops, squid, octopus and snails. Mollusc (shellfish) allergy is usually lifelong and can be severe.

Health effects of a reaction

Reactions can range from mild to anaphylaxis. Molluscs can be present in sauces, seafood mixes, stocks and some Asian condiments (such as oyster sauce).

How it leads to a recall

Recalls occur when mollusc is present but not declared, through labelling errors, recipe changes or cross-contamination.

What to do

If you are allergic, do not eat the affected product — return it for a refund. Carry your adrenaline auto-injector and call 112/999 for a severe reaction.
