Sesame: risks and product recalls in Ireland

An increasingly recognised allergen that can cause severe reactions and is often hidden in breads, dips and spice mixes.

Most at risk: People with sesame allergy.

What it is

Sesame seeds and sesame products such as tahini and sesame oil are a declarable allergen. Sesame allergy is often lifelong and can be severe.

Health effects of a reaction

Reactions can range from mild to anaphylaxis. Sesame is easily hidden in breads and bakery items, hummus and dips, falafel, spice blends and some oils.

How it leads to a recall

Recalls occur when sesame is present but not declared, through labelling or packaging errors, recipe changes, or cross-contamination.

What to do

If you are allergic to sesame, do not eat the affected product — return it for a refund. Carry your adrenaline auto-injector and call 112/999 for a severe reaction.
