Small parts & choking: risks and product recalls in Ireland

Toys and products that can shed small parts are a choking hazard for young children and a leading reason toys are recalled.

Most at risk: Babies and children under three.

What it is

Small parts are pieces small enough for a young child to put in their mouth and choke on. Toys for children under three must not contain small parts that detach, and others must carry a warning.

Health effects

A small part that is swallowed or inhaled can block a young child's airway and cause choking, which can be life-threatening within minutes.

How it leads to a recall

Products are recalled when parts can detach too easily, when a toy breaks into small pieces, or when small parts are present in a toy aimed at under-threes — often cheap toys sold on online marketplaces.

What to do

Keep an affected product away from young children and return it for a refund. Learn infant and child choking first aid. In a choking emergency, call 112/999.

SHEIN recalls Robot Fish Bath Toy Set due to choking and chemical risk

SHEIN is recalling the Robot Fish Bath Toy Set sold on its marketplace due to a risk of choking and chemical hazards. The battery compartment can be easily opened, allowing small children access to button batteries, which poses a choking risk and potential gastrointestinal damage.
