Tree nuts: risks and product recalls in Ireland

Almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews and other tree nuts are a declarable allergen distinct from peanuts, and a common cause of severe reactions.

Most at risk: People with tree nut allergy.

What it is

Tree nuts include almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews, pecans, pistachios, macadamia and Brazil nuts. They are a separate allergen from peanuts, though some people are allergic to both. Tree nut allergy is usually lifelong.

Health effects of a reaction

Reactions range from mild skin and stomach symptoms to anaphylaxis. As with peanut, small amounts can cause severe reactions in highly sensitised people.

How it leads to a recall

Recalls happen when a tree nut is present but not declared, or when cross-contamination from shared equipment is not flagged. Nuts appear in baked goods, chocolate, cereals, pesto, sauces and snacks.

What to do

If you are allergic, do not eat the affected product — return it for a refund. Carry your adrenaline auto-injector and call 112/999 for any sign of a severe reaction.
