What to do if you own a recalled product

Found out a product you own has been recalled in Ireland? Here's exactly what to do, step by step.

1. Stop using the product immediately

Recalls are issued because a product poses a real risk — choking, fire, contamination, injury. Whatever the reason, stop using the product straight away and keep it out of reach of children. Don't wait to confirm whether your exact unit is affected first: stop, then check.

2. Check whether your unit is actually affected

Most recalls only affect specific batches, date codes or serial numbers. The recall notice will tell you where to find the code on your product — commonly on the packaging, the base of the product, or a sewn-in label. Compare it against the affected batch codes listed in the notice. You can search recalls.ie by product name, brand or batch code to find the notice.

3. Don't bin it — follow the remedy in the notice

Every recall notice states a remedy. The most common ones in Ireland are:

  • Return to store for a full refund — usually no receipt required for safety recalls.
  • Free repair or replacement part — common for vehicles and appliances.
  • Dispose safely and claim a refund — common for contaminated food, where returning it isn't sensible.

For food recalls, supermarkets display point-of-sale notices and refund recalled items at customer service, typically without a receipt.

4. Contact the manufacturer if the product came from elsewhere

Bought it second-hand, received it as a gift, or the shop has closed? Contact the manufacturer or importer directly — safety recalls apply to the product, not the purchase. The recall notice includes contact details; on each recalls.ie recall page these appear as clickable links.

5. Tell people who might have one

Recalls only work when owners hear about them. If you know someone with the same product — family WhatsApp groups are how most recalls spread in Ireland — share the recall page with them. Every recall on this site has share buttons for exactly that.

Where recalls come from

Irish recalls are published by the FSAI (food), the CCPC (consumer products) and the RSA (vehicles). Recalls.ie aggregates all of them in one place — see the full recall archive or browse food, toys and vehicle recalls.
