BMW Automotive (Ireland) Limited has announced a voluntary recall affecting several series of BMW vehicles, including the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 series, as well as X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, and Z4 models. The recall is due to a safety concern where water may enter the starter motor, leading to corrosion. This could prevent the engine from starting and may also result in a short circuit, which poses a fire risk. A total of 6,821 vehicles produced between September 28, 2015, and September 7, 2021, are affected in the Republic of Ireland.
Additionally, certain 2 series, iX2, X2, iX1, and X1 vehicles are being recalled due to improperly manufactured front seat belts. This defect could reduce the effectiveness of the seat belts in a collision, increasing the risk of injury. Only 25 vehicles produced between June 18, 2025, and August 25, 2025, are involved in this recall.
Another recall pertains to specific X3 vehicles where the outer headrests in the second row may not provide adequate protection in an accident due to manufacturing errors. Eight vehicles produced between July 11, 2024, and July 15, 2025, are affected. Furthermore, certain 3 Series, 4 Series, i4, 5 Series, i5, and X3 vehicles have a recall due to a potential issue with the positive battery cable, which could lead to overheating and a fire risk. This affects two vehicles produced between September 1, 2023, and February 25, 2025.
Lastly, there is a recall for certain 2 series, 5 series, i5, 7 series, i7, X1, iX1, X2, iX2, X5, X6, X7, XM, X5M, and X6M vehicles due to a welding defect in the servomotor shaft, which could lead to reduced braking performance and increased stopping distances. Four vehicles produced between July 6, 2022, and November 13, 2024, are included in this recall. Affected customers will be contacted directly by BMW to arrange necessary repairs or replacements.
