Gowan Distributors Limited (Opel Ireland) has announced a recall affecting multiple Opel vehicle models due to safety concerns. The affected models include the Opel Grandland X, Corsa, Astra, Combo, Vivaro, Frontera, Mokka, and Movano, with specific issues ranging from steering failures to potential fire hazards. The recalls involve vehicles produced between May 2023 and February 2026, with a total of 1,435 vehicles impacted in the Republic of Ireland.
One significant issue involves the Opel Grandland X, where a mechanical failure in the gearbox bearing could lead to a loss of power steering assist, causing the steering to lock. This poses a serious risk as it can prevent drivers from steering the vehicle effectively. Additionally, certain Opel models with DV5R engines may experience engine failure due to slippage of the water pump pulley, which could misalign the timing belt and lead to engine shutdown.
Another concern is related to the assembly of some Opel vehicles, where insufficient clearance between the petrol particulate filter and the starter alternator could allow water to infiltrate, potentially causing an electric arc and a fire risk. Furthermore, there are recalls for the Movano model due to non-compliant fuel return pipes that could lead to fuel leaks, and for Astra L, Combo, and Vivaro models where a fuel leak could occur due to a loose nut on the common rail.
Customers who believe their vehicle may be affected are advised to contact Opel directly to arrange for necessary repairs at their local dealer or authorized repairer. Gowan Distributors Limited will also reach out to affected customers to provide further instructions.
