The products present a risk to health as the sand may contain asbestos. Asbestos is a banned substance across the EU because it poses a risk to health. HSE Public Health advice is that there is low risk to human health from these sand products based on current information.

These products were sold via the following retailers:

  • Now Newsagents Ltd, T/A Cards N Things
  • Stellar Retail Ltd, T/A uPARTY
  • Bobby's Fishing Tackle

What to do: 

The CCPC is advising consumers who have the product in their home to do the following:

  • Stop using the product immediately.
  • If the sand is still packaged, place it in a heavy-duty plastic bag, seal it securely, label it clearly and store it in a secure location out of reach of children. 
  • If the product is punctured and the sand inside is accessible, clean sites where the product was used using wet cloths to avoid generating dust. Wear gloves and a protective FFP2 face mask or equivalent. Do not use a vacuum cleaner for clean-up. Double bag the sand, gloves, mask and cloths. Seal it securely, label it clearly and store it in a secure location out of reach of children
  • Prior to disposal contact your place of purchase to request a refund.

The CCPC continues to engage with the Health Service Executive (HSE), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), as required. Further updates will be provided as soon as additional information becomes available.
