Allergens
Celery: risks and product recalls in Ireland
Celery (including celeriac and celery seed) is a declarable allergen often hidden in stocks, soups and spice mixes.
What it is
Celery allergy covers the stalks, leaves, seeds and the root (celeriac). Celery and celery salt are widely used as flavourings in stocks, soups, sauces and processed foods.
Health effects of a reaction
Reactions range from mild oral symptoms to, in some people, severe reactions including anaphylaxis.
How it leads to a recall
Recalls occur when celery is present but not declared, often because it is part of a stock, seasoning or spice blend that was not fully listed.
What to do
If you are allergic to celery, do not eat the affected product — return it for a refund, and follow your allergy action plan if you react.
