Peanuts: risks and product recalls in Ireland

One of the most common causes of severe, life-threatening food allergy; even trace amounts of undeclared peanut can trigger a reaction.

Most at risk: People with peanut allergy; reactions can be severe even with tiny amounts.

What it is

Peanuts are legumes (not tree nuts), but peanut allergy is among the most common and most serious food allergies. It usually begins in childhood and is often lifelong.

Health effects of a reaction

Peanut allergy can cause severe, rapid reactions including anaphylaxis, which affects breathing and blood pressure and can be fatal without prompt treatment. Even a trace amount can trigger a reaction in a highly sensitised person.

How it leads to a recall

Recalls are issued when peanut is present but not declared, or when a product made on shared equipment carries a risk of peanut cross-contamination that was not flagged. Peanut can be hidden in sauces, baked goods, snacks and processed foods.

What to do

If you are allergic to peanut, do not eat the affected product — return it for a refund. Carry your adrenaline auto-injector, follow your allergy action plan, and call 112/999 immediately for any sign of a severe reaction.
