Salmonella: risks and product recalls in Ireland

A common cause of food poisoning (salmonellosis), usually from raw poultry, eggs and meat, that can be serious for the very young, older people and anyone with a weakened immune system.

Most at risk: Infants and young children, adults over 65, and people with weakened immune systems.

What it is

Salmonella is a group of bacteria that live in the gut of animals and birds. It is one of the most common causes of food poisoning, and is often linked to raw or undercooked poultry, eggs, meat, and foods contaminated by them.

Health effects

Salmonellosis typically causes diarrhoea (sometimes with blood), stomach cramps, fever and vomiting, starting 6 hours to 6 days after exposure and usually lasting a few days to a week. Most people recover without treatment, but severe dehydration or the infection spreading to the blood can be dangerous, particularly for babies, older adults and immunocompromised people.

How it leads to a recall

Products are recalled when Salmonella is detected during testing, or linked to illness. It turns up in raw and undercooked meat and poultry, eggs and egg products, unpasteurised dairy, and occasionally in spices, nuts, chocolate and prepared foods.

What to do

Do not eat an affected product — return it for a refund. Stay hydrated if you are ill, and contact your GP if symptoms are severe or prolonged, if there is blood in your stool, or if a young child, older person or someone with a weak immune system is affected.
