Soya: risks and product recalls in Ireland

A widely used ingredient and one of the 14 declarable allergens; undeclared soya is a common recall reason.

Most at risk: People with soya allergy, more common in young children.

What it is

Soya (soybean) is used widely in processed foods, including as soy flour, soy protein and soy lecithin. Soya allergy is more common in children and is sometimes outgrown.

Health effects of a reaction

Reactions are often mild to moderate — skin, stomach and respiratory symptoms — but can occasionally be severe. Soya is found in many processed and vegetarian foods, sauces and baked goods.

How it leads to a recall

Recalls happen when soya is present but not declared, through labelling errors, recipe changes or cross-contamination.

What to do

If you are allergic to soya, do not eat the affected product — return it for a refund, and follow your allergy action plan if you react.
