Listeria: risks and product recalls in Ireland

A bacterium that causes listeriosis, a rare but serious infection that is especially dangerous in pregnancy and for older or immunocompromised people.

Most at risk: Pregnant people, newborns, adults over 65, and anyone with a weakened immune system.

What it is

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium found widely in the environment — in soil, water and on raw foods. Unlike most food bugs, it can keep growing at fridge temperatures, which is why it is a particular concern in chilled ready-to-eat foods.

Health effects

In healthy adults it often causes mild flu-like illness or no symptoms. But it can cause listeriosis — a serious infection with high fever, muscle aches, and sometimes meningitis or blood poisoning. In pregnancy it can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth or severe illness in the newborn, even when the mother feels only mildly unwell.

How it leads to a recall

Recalls are issued when Listeria is detected in a product or its production environment, most often in chilled ready-to-eat foods: soft cheeses, cooked and smoked meats and fish, pâté, pre-prepared sandwiches and salads, and some dairy. Because it grows in the cold, even correctly refrigerated food can become unsafe over time.

What to do

If you have an affected product, do not eat it — return it for a refund or dispose of it. Listeriosis symptoms can appear up to 70 days after exposure, so if you are pregnant, over 65, or have a weakened immune system and feel unwell after eating a recalled product, contact your GP and mention the recall.
